Speaker Berri: Lebanon faces new complications after US delegation visit

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri voiced frustration over the recent visit of a U.S. delegation to Lebanon.

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Berri said, “The Americans brought us the opposite of what they promised,” referring to expectations of an Israeli response to the “step-by-step” policy.

He added that the U.S. delegation “did not bring anything from Israel, and therefore matters have become more complicated again.”

Berri declined to comment on the next phase in light of the new complications but stressed that “things are not easy.”

Asked about the government meeting scheduled for September 2 to discuss the army’s plan to disarm Hezbollah, he said, “Anything that leads to division in the country is unacceptable.”
