6 injured in LAU clashes, university suspends classes until tomorrow

6 people, including one security official, were injured at the Lebanese American University (LAU) campus in Beirut following clashes that erupted Tuesday. The dispute began between students of the opposition and others of the majority following a ceremony organized by the Future bloc in celebration of late Rafik Hariri’s birthday near the University campus.

Following the incident, the General Directorate of Public Relations and Media at LAU announced that the university regrets having to suspend classes at its Beirut campus as a result of a confrontation that occurred on the afternoon of November 1, 2011 outside the campus, evolving into the area next to the upper gate.

LAU announced that it would reconvene classes tomorrow and that it will take the necessary measures in cooperation with the general security forces to ensure the safety of the students.

The confrontation comes ahead of the university student body elections scheduled for next week.
