President Sleiman meets with PM-Designate Salam

President Michel Sleiman met on Tuesday morning with Prime Minister-Designate Tammam Salam at the Presidential palace in Baabda.

Discussions featured high over the results of deliberations held by the PM-Designate in order to form a new government.

PM-Designate Salam left the Baabda Palace without giving any statement.

In this context, sources told LBCI that the new cabinet will not be announced on Wednesday, adding that deliberations in this regard will be resumed after the General Authority session.

Same sources noted that the new government will be a "national unity government" comprised of all Lebanese factions.

Salam was named Prime Minister-Designate after the second round of the binding parliamentary consultations to name a prime minister ended on April 6 at the Baabda Palace, with 124 deputies nominating Salam as Prime Minister.

Mikati resigned last month after two fraught years in office during which he sought to contain sectarian tensions, street violence and economic fallout from the civil war raging in neighboring Syria.

Salam's main task will be to steer the fractious country towards a parliamentary election which is due in June but is now widely expected to face delays.

Mikati resigned following a cabinet dispute with Hezbollah and its allies - who brought him to power in early 2011 - over extending the term of a top security official and preparations for the parliamentary vote.
