Lebanese President Aoun says ceasefire is gateway to negotiations

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that a ceasefire remains the essential entry point for moving forward with negotiations, describing the phase as both sensitive and decisive, with global attention focused on Lebanon.

Aoun stressed that the state's position is centered on implementing the ceasefire, securing the withdrawal of Israeli forces from South Lebanon, facilitating the return of detainees, and addressing outstanding border disputes.

He added that the ceasefire option enjoys both domestic and international backing, pointing in particular to support expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The president also highlighted the central role of the Lebanese Army in the next phase, saying it will deploy up to the internationally recognized southern borders, work to end armed presence outside state control, and reassure residents in the south following Israeli withdrawal.
