Subsidized schools to shut doors if state cuts off support

Mar Mansour School, one of 380 subsidized schools in Lebanon, is plagued with even more problems since the state has not paid into the school’s coffers in four years.     The school cannot withstand more burdens while it intakes nearly 600 students.

One public school student costs the state around 2.5 million LBP while one subsidized school student costs nearly half at 1.5 million LBP.

Catholic Schools Secretary General Marwan Tabet confirmed that the Union of Educational Institutions, which is tasked with following up on the issue, was promised by the Finance and Budget Committee to soon find a solution to this problem.

Tabet told LBCI that he hopes that the upcoming measures will decrease the number of free schools being closed after half of them permanently shut their doors in the last few years.
