REPORT: Legal strategies to extend General Kahwaji's mandate

In light of the impossibility of forming a new cabinet, and the difficulty to convene the parliament, Caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn said that officials are seeking means to prevent any void within the military institution seemingly since the mandate of General Jean Kahwaji ends in September.

One of the means which is being discussed is implementing article 55 of the defense law which stipulates extending the term of the army commander upon the request of the defense minister in the case of war, a state of emergency, or when tasking the Lebanese Armed Forces with maintaining the country's stability.

This report will shed light on article 55 of the defense law as well as the stance of Future Bloc MP Hadi Hobeich in regards to void at the aforementioned institution.
