REPORT: Higher Defense Council convenes at Baabda Palace, discusses security issues

A session for the Higher Defense Council was held on Friday at the Baabda Palace in the presence of President Michel Sleiman, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati, caretaker Minister of Defense Fayez Ghosn, caretaker Minister of Interior Marwan Charbel, caretaker Minister of Social Affairs Wael Abou Faour, caretaker Minister of Economy Nicolas Nahhas, caretaker Minister of Information Walid Daouk, cartaker Minister of Finance Mohammad Safadi and security leaders.

Talks featured high on the latest security developments, mainly the US potential strike against Syria and its repercussions on Lebanon and the entire region, as well as the influx of Syrian refugees into the country following the strike.

Prior to the session, President Sleiman held talks with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

US President Barack Obama had asked Congress to back his plan for limited strikes in response to a chemical weapons attack on civilians that the United States blames on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

A potential response is still being discussed furthermore between the US and world powers at the G-20 summit.

The Assad regime has so far denied links to the alleged chemical attacks.
