REPORT: Hundreds of Syrian students displaced by war enrolled in Turkish funded school

Hundreds of Syrian children who were forced to leave their homes and cross the border into Turkey are finally receiving education, thanks to a new project set-up by the Turkish government.

A school created especially for Syrian children displaced by the war has opened its doors in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul.

The Kademoon school is the first of its kind and is a pilot scheme aimed at addressing education shortages in areas where large populations of Syrian refugees live.

One obstacle that the school, which opened in October, has had to overcome is certification. It is not accredited by the Turkish Ministry of Education, which governs the issuance of degrees.Nor is it recognized by Assad's government.

A member of the board of directors said the school has temporarily solved this problem by reaching an agreement with Libya, whose authorities will issue middle school and high school completion certificates to Kademoon students so they can continue their education.

Turkey houses more than half a million Syrian refugees, and has spent some two billion US dollars providing housing and humanitarian aid.

An estimated 200,000 people live in refugee camps along Turkey's 910 kilometer (565 mile) border with Syria. Others have moved into cities like Istanbul.

The conflict in Syria is now in its third year and has claimed the lives of over 100,000 people.
