Kataeb party leader Amine Gemayel said on Thursday that the failure to elect a new President before May 25 ”would pose a serious threat to Lebanon,” adding that Lebanon would head towards the abyss in case of a presidential vacuum.

Gemayel called on all Lebanese leaders to deploy all possible efforts to protect both the Lebanese republic and the presidency.

Gemayel’s comments were made following his meeting with MP Sleiman Frangieh in Bnachii where discussions featured high over the latest developments in the country.

Gemayel stressed the importance of holding the presidential bid and highlighted the efforts deployed to respect constitutional deadlines.

For his part, MP Frangieh said that he supports the election of a new president before May 25, adding that Lebanese leaders should seek the election of a strong president who represents the majority of Christians.

Frangieh concluded by voicing his pessimism over the possibility of Lebanese leaders agreeing on one candidate for the presidency, adding that he asserted to Gemayel that he is still adamant on electing MP Michel Aoun as the next head of state.

Lebanese MPs failed in the first, second and third rounds of the vote to elect a new president due to disputes between the country's rival political camps, March 8 and March 14.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, who is the March 14 alliance's only candidate, failed in the first round to obtain the needed two-thirds of votes of the 128-member parliament.

In the second round, March 8's MPs boycotted the session, resulting in lack of quorum.

 March 8 did not yet officially announce its candidate. But the camp’s figures have reiterated that Lebanon needs a consensual person in the country's top Christian post.

President Michel Sleiman's tenure ends in May 2014 but the constitutional period to elect a new head of state began on March 25.
