REPORT: Contract workers at Tripoli municipality stage sit-in

Contract workers at the Tripoli municipality staged a sit-in on Monday outside the municipality's building to protest the failure to grant them full-time employment, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Protesters highlighted the need to settle their case and hoisted banners warning against the failure to meet their demands.

The workers also prevented other employees from entering their offices, the agency said, adding that tight security measures were taken by members of the Internal Security Forces.

Thousands of Lebanese teachers, civil servants, contract workers and others have been on a continuous sit-in, urging the state to grant them their rights.

The Union Coordination Committee, for instance, has announced a comprehensive open-ended strike at all public institutions, pointing out that teachers will boycott the supervision and correction of official state exams.

The UCC said in a press conference that the fate of official exams is linked to the dossier of the series of ranks and salaries the lawmakers have failed to endorse so far.
