REPORT: Speaker Berri to keep legislative sessions over pay scale "open-ended"
Speaker Nabih Berri decided on Thursday to keep the legislative sessions tasked to approve the pay scale in an open-ended status after lawmakers failed to reach the required quorum during today's session.

This as Berri held talks with Minister of Education Elias Bou Saab, Minister of Finance Ali Hassan Khalil, Minister of Public Works Ghazi Zoueiter, MP Ibrahim Kanaan, MP Alain Aoun and MP Bahiya Hariri.

Following the meeting, MP Hariri said that the new pay scale will not be endorsed today, calling on the UCC not to lose hope.

Speaker Berri also met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam over the said issue.

Earlier, the Union Coordination Committee (UCC) said that no agreement has yet been reached over the controversial dossier.

A UCC delegation had met with Speaker Nabih Berri at parliament to warn against the repercussions of the failure to approve the pay scale, adding that all constitutional institutions will be paralyzed.

The UCC also declared that it will continue boycotting the correction of official state exams, noting that a meeting will be held today in order to decide further steps in this regard.

The Union Coordinating Committee resumed its movements a couple of months ago calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike.

The decision to revive movements came as a result of the failure of the Joint Parliamentary Committees to resolve the dispute on the Value Added Tax in a proposal aimed at securing the funds for the salary scale that was approved by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati's cabinet.

Former PM Mikati's cabinet endorsed the new salary scale for public employees in 2012, ending a long dispute that had triggered several sit-ins and strikes held by the UCC.

President Michel Sleiman signed the decree mid-June 2013 and it was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committees for further examination, however the law was never passed to parliament.
