REPORT: LF leader Geagea: Aoun's proposal "is not possible at the time being"

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea held on Wednesday a press conference during which he said that instead of electing a new president, some Lebanese leaders have turned the discussion towards the Taef Accord and past developments.          

Geagea noted that a constitutional amendment is not possible at the time being because the parliament is only holding extraordinary sessions due to the presidential vacuum.         

He also stressed that the two most popular Christian figures are himself and MP Michel Aoun, calling on MP Aoun to formally announce his candidacy.        Geagea said that contacts between the parties are "useless" as long as Hezbollah and the March 8 camp continue to hinder the elections.       

Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun had suggested that the Lebanese constitution be amended, allowing the people to directly elect their president as opposed to parliament.        

"I propose a limited amendment to the constitution to allow the Lebanese people to decide on the presidential election over two rounds," Aoun said during a press conference on Monday.         

Parliament has failed in the previous rounds to elect a successor to President Michel Sleiman, whose six-year mandate expired on May 25 after the March 8 and 14 camps failed to agree on a consensual candidate.            

The majority of the March 8 camp's MPs, including the lawmakers of MP Michel Aoun's Change and Reform bloc, have boycotted the sessions, leading to a lack of the needed quorum.
