REPORT: LU contract professors on a continuous sit-in

Contract professors at the Lebanese University staged on Thursday a sit-in in Beirut’s Riad al-Solh whereby they said that the university is at stake.

“The Lebanese University is on the brink of a meltdown,” they said, urging the concerned authorities to grant them full-time employment at the university.

The professors also hoped that the files pertaining to the LU will be prioritized, adding that the Council of Deans has called for a meeting on Friday.

For his part, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said there was no problem with regards to the full-time employment issue, noting that differences among cabinet members lie in the appointment of deans.

The minister also briefed the teachers on the draft decree he submitted to the cabinet. It tackles the professors’ tenure at the LU, their number and the university’s requirements.

LU contract professors have been on a continuous sit-in, calling for permanent tenure at the university.

The professors said their movement will not end unless the Parliament meets their demands, stressing that they will be taking escalatory measures.
