REPORT: STL decides on jurisdiction in al-Jadeed case
The Contempt Judge has issued on Thursday a decision that rules that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon does not have jurisdiction to hear cases of obstruction of justice against legal persons (corporate entities).

Judge Nicola Lettieri confirmed that under Rule 60 bis the Tribunal does have jurisdiction to hear cases for offenses against the administration of justice against natural persons.

The Contempt Judge's decision comes after the Defense for NEW TV S.A.L. and Karma Mohamed Tahsin Al Khayat submitted a motion on 16 June 2014, challenging the jurisdiction of the Tribunal to hear cases of contempt in relation to legal persons. The accused had not challenged the authority of the Tribunal to prosecute them for obstruction of justice, but pleaded not guilty on the merits.

Khayat and al-Akhbar daily's editor-in-chief Ibrahim al-Amin and their media organizations New TV S.A.L. and Akhbar Beirut S.A.L. had been charged with contempt by the STL after they revealed details of alleged Tribunal's witnesses.

The initial hearing in the contempt case was held on May 13 at the STL's headquarters in The Hague, amid the absence of al-Amin who later appeared before the court via video conference.

The STL has indicted five Hezbollah members for allegedly being involved in former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri's assassination in February 2005.

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah dubbed the court as a US-Israeli scheme against his group and vowed that the accused will never be found.
