REPORT: Cabinet holds session, approves Saudi grant to LAF
A cabinet session was held on Thursday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam. During the session, the council of ministers approved the one billion dollar Saudi grant to the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Minister of Interior Nohad Machnouq noted that the mechanism for the distribution of the grant is “being prepared by legal experts.”

Last week, former Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced that Saudi Arabia will support the Lebanese army with a one billion dollar grant, following the clashes between LAF troops and militants in the border town of Arsal.

Hariri made a surprise return to Lebanon on Friday, after spending three years of self-imposed exile, and declared that he was tasked by Saudi King Abdullah with overseeing the management of the grant.

Also on Thursday, the cabinet approved a decree to establish a second branch of the ministry of labor in Mount Lebanon to facilitate the citizens' transactions.

As well, the government approved Labor Minister Sejaan Qazzi's proposal of temporarily offering scholarships to workers aged between 4 and 25 in the academic year 2013-14.

The cabinet also reiterated that it tasked Minister Elias Bou Saab with issuing passing certificates to students who undertook the official exams in a bid to "save their future."

Minister Elias Bou Saab had postponed on Tuesday issuing passing certificates untill the end of the week as the Union Coordination Committee decided to contact political parties in an attempt to break the salary raise deadlock.

Bou Saab's decision came after members from the UCC prevented teachers willing to cooperate with authorities in a bid to correct official exams from entering the headquarters of the Ministry of Education.

The members stressed that they will continue boycotting the correction of the state official exams until parliament passes the series of ranks and salaries.

The Union Coordinating Committee has been on a continuous sit-in calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike.
