REPORT: Clashes erupt between LAF and wanted suspects in Brital

Clashes erupted on Tuesday between the Lebanese army and wanted suspects on the outskirts of the Bekaa town of Brital.

The clashes broke out as the army was carrying out raids in search for a hostage kidnapped from the nearby town of Saadnayel.

The captive is identified as Ayman Sawwan, who was kidnapped on Monday afternoon in the Bekaa city of Baalbek for unknown reasons.

The development led to unrest in his hometown of Saadnayel and prompted its residents to kidnap seven public van drivers in retaliation.

The seven drivers were released shortly after as a goodwill gesture towards Sawwan's kidnappers.

For his part, Ayman Sawwan's brother said in a press conference that there are no financial reasons behind the kidnapping of his brother, asserting that Ayman does not owe money to any person.

He also noted that Saadnayel's residents will stage "civilized" sit-ins to protest the kidnapping.

In turn, Saadnayel's head of municipality urged the political and security leaders to deploy their efforts in this regard, asserting that Saadnayel will not "be the cradle of sectarian sedition."
