REPORT: LAF soldier killed in Akkar shooting, protesters block Qobayyat road

"A military bus transporting troops to their duty stations came under fire by gunmen at 4:45 a.m. in the Akkar region of al-Bireh," the Army Command- Orientation Directorate said on Friday, noting that a Lebanese Armed Forces soldier was killed.

The army cordoned off the area and launched a hunting operation in hopes of capturing the assailants.

Units from the military police's criminal evidence department inspected the crime scene while the body of the soldier was taken to a nearby hospital.

The Army Command mourned the LAF martyr who was identified as 19-year-old Jamal Jean Hashem.

Sorrow and grief gripped the victim's relatives who closed schools and blocked the Qobayyat road in protest.

Protesters from the Bireh town also blocked the main road at the crime scene to voice solidarity with the Lebanese army.

Meanwhile, military troops conducted raids in the Kherbet Daoud town and inspected the residence of fugitive soldier Atef Saad Eddine, the state-run National News Agency reported.
