REPORT: Patriarch Rai from Australia: Lebanese people should not get used to presidential vacuum
Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai renewed on Saturday his call for the swift election of a new president, rejecting to let the Lebanese people get used to the presidential vacuum.

Rai's comments were made during a meeting at the Maronite Diocese of Saint Maron of Sydney in Australia.

The Patriarch headed to Sydney on Thursday on a two-week visit.

Patriarch Rai stressed that there is no state that accepts the vacuum that Lebanon is passing through, urging lawmakers to assume their responsibilities and elect a new president.

The country has been without a president since the mandate of Michel Sleiman ended in May as the rival political parties failed so far to agree on a consensual candidate, which is threatening to thwart the upcoming parliamentary elections.

 “Christians should not fear because they are not minorities in (Lebanon) and the region,” Rai also stressed.

Patriarch Rai also stressed the importance of eliminating all forms of support to extremist and terrorist groups.

For the past few months, the Lebanese army has been coming under increasing armed attacks mainly in northern Lebanon.

Since August, the Lebanese army has been fighting militants from the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front near the border with Syria.
