REPORT: Lebanese army arrests five people in Arsal
Security sources told LBCI on Sunday that the Lebanese army arrested a number of Syrian nationals in the border town of Arsal, one of them was wearing an explosive belt.

The Syrians were accompanying a Sheikh identified only by his initials H. Gh. to the outskirts of Arsal to meet with the al-Nusra Front officials.

Later in the day, the Lebanese army issued a statement in which it stated that a Lebanese army unit intercepted in Arsal “a Nissan Armada SUV carrying 5 people, including two Syrian fugitives.”

“They were all on their way to Arsal's outskirts and one of them was carrying an explosive belt,” the army's statement noted.

It added that they were also carrying two hand grenades, three assault rifles, four pistols, a quantity of bullets and a communication device.

The Lebanese army interrogated the Sheikh who allegedly was visiting Arsal to obtain a pledge from the abductors to stop the execution of the kidnapped Lebanese troops.

The army also said that it detonated the explosive belt in the aforementioned area, while the arrestees and the seized weapons were referred to the concerned authorities.

The hostage troops and policemen were captured when jihadists from al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State groups briefly overran Arsal in August and engaged in fierce battles with the Lebanese army.

Four captives have been executed so far, and the jihadists have threatened to kill the remaining hostages unless there is a deal to free Islamist prisoners in Lebanon.

The Muslim Scholars Committee has recently announced that it will seek a pledge from the captors on halting executions.

The abducted troops and policemen were captured when jihadists from the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State groups briefly overran the border town of Arsal last August and engaged in battles with the Lebanese army.

Four captives have been executed so far, and the jihadists have threatened to kill the rest of the hostages unless there is a deal to free Islamist inmates in Lebanon.
