REPORT: Speaker Berri warns against plan to divide the region

Speaker Nabih Berri warned on Wednesday against plans to divide the region, including Lebanon.

Berri’s comments were made during his weekly meeting with MPs at his residence in Ain el-Tineh.

“Lebanon is like the atom. If it is split, then it will explode, as well as the region around it.”

In addition, he noted that a deal between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program will have direct repercussions on the region.

The speaker therefore urged the Lebanese to show more unity to strengthen the country.

Berri also hoped that government work would resume “because we are in dire need of tackling several problems and files.”

A cabinet session has been scheduled for Thursday.

As for the dialogue between the Future Movement and Hezbollah, the speaker said: “The talks and the consequences they are producing have become a factor in easing down tension in the country.”

The two sides had held the seventh round of their dialogue on Monday. Dialogue between the two parties had kicked off on December 23, 2014.
