REPORT: Thousands of Armenians in Lebanon mark genocide centennial
Thousands of Lebanon's Armenians marched on Friday (April 24) to commemorate the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

Protesters departed from the Armenian Church in Antelias, to the City Mall Bridge, Itihad Gallery junction, Khabbaz Gallery junction until the Burj Hamoud stadium.

The demonstrators, some hoisting Armenia's flags, held banners calling for recognition and justice.

Tashnag leader MP Hagop Pakradounian urged Turkey to “acknowledge its responsibility in order to achieve justice and to compensate [the Armenian people] on the moral, political, financial and geographical level”.

“We gather today to recall and remember the victims of crimes and genocide so that it won’t happen again,” MP Pakradounian said during the ceremony held in Burj Hamoud.

“We are victims of international silence and interests of nations that speak of democracy and justice, yet continue to kill and occupy,” Pakradounian said.

He also called on Arab states to acknowledge Turkey’s responsibility for the Armenian genocide, but refused however to give this affair a religious dimension.

Prior to the march, a mass was held at the Armenian Church Catholicosate of Cilicia in Antelias.

Historians estimate that nearly 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks, in the first genocide of the 20th century.
