REPORT: Cabinet convenes at Grand Serail, discusses various issues
The Lebanese cabinet convened on Thursday at the Grand Serail to discuss the agenda originally proposed Monday, including items related to the security appointments and the situation at the northeastern border town of Arsal.

Following the session, Information Minister Ramzi Jreij said that the government tasked the Lebanese army with taking necessary measures to deploy inside the northeastern border town of Arsal to protect it against militant attacks.

The ministers also agreed to continue discussions over all other issues during next Thursday session.

This as sources told LBCI that Interior Minister Nouhad Mashnouq informed the cabinet that he was mulling to extend the mandate of Internal Security Forces chief Major General Ibrahim Basbous and to appoint Joseph Helou as police chief through a decree.
Basbous' mandate ends at midnight Thursday.
 
Prior to the session, Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon stressed the need that governmental work not be hindered, while Environment Minister Mohammad al-Mashnouq said that all the ministers are keen on preserving the work of cabinet.
 
For his part, Sports and Youth Minister Abdel Muttaleb Hennawi said that the cabinet’s work will not be obstructed, noting that Prime Minister Tammam Salam is the one who decides its fate.
 
Minister Hennawi pointed out that he supports the security appointments, noting however, that in the case of failure to fill the vacant positions, he supports mandate extension without a specific deadline.
 
In turn, Labor Minister Sejaan Azzi stressed the need to agree upon the importance of holding three types of session: one for budget and agendas, one for the security appointments and another for Arsal.
 
“The people’s affairs must not be obstructed or put on hold just to fill vacant posts,” he stated.
