REPORT: Lebanon’s waste crisis may soon cause flour shortage

Residents of the Karantina region voiced their rejection to the disposal of waste in the area, after waste management company, Sukleen, began transporting tons of waste to a land located just 20 meters away from the Bakalian flour mills.

Accordingly, the mills suspended their work on Wednesday morning due to the prevalent unsanitary conditions, after garbage was dumped near the facility.

The mills produce 40% of the total Lebanese market’s demand of flour, thus negatively affecting the market should work at the mills remain suspended.

In this context, sources told LBCI that contacts have been conducted between the mills’ administration and the ministries of economy and environment, adding that the administration received reassurances that the waste will be removed from the said land.

This as, Beirut’s governor stressed that there is no alternative land to dump the waste.
