Activists continued on Wednesday their preparations "to face the Lebanese government’s plan to move the country’s dump to the northern district of Akkar." Head of Machha’s municipality told LBCI that hundreds have voiced their objection to such plans, adding that the cabinet should have taken the point of views of the heads of municipalities before taking such decisions. He also stressed that Akkar “is not a dump site,” noting that the $100 million grant is “initially their right.” For their part, activists from the "Akkar is not a Garbage Dump" campaign told LBCI that they are planning a major escalation. They also called on Akkar residents to participate in the sit-in that will take place in Halba. “Beware of the hungry people!” they warned.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mouein Merehbi told LBCI that deputies of Akkar did not receive any draft plan pertaining to the establishment of a landfill in the region.
Merehbi also noted that deputies will discuss this matter with the minister of environment upon its proposal. An extraordinary cabinet session convened on Tuesday at the Grand Serail under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tammam Salam. Following the session, Information Minister Ramzi Jreij said the ministers annulled the results of the waste management tenders and returned the file to the concerned ministerial committee, amid the withdrawal of Hezbollah, Change and Reform bloc and Tachnag ministers from the session. On another note, Jreij declared that 100 million dollars will be allocated to Akkar district to set up developmental projects, which some politicians have proposed as a potential landfill site.
