REPORT: Civil society activists declare end to their hunger strike

Civil society activists who have been on hunger strike for two weeks announced on Thursday that they will end their strike and resume eating due to pressure from police and other activists.

The group’s spokesperson Waref Sleiman said in a conference from Downtown Beirut that the group will now join other activists in their protests and will remain in their current location outside the Environment Ministry as a permanent spot for meetings.

Several activists started a hunger strike on Thursday (September 03) outside the Environment Ministry’s building in Beirut to press for Minister Mohammad Mashnouq's resignation. The protesters set up tents on the pavement facing the building.

The move came two days after riot police cleared dozens of "You Stink “activists who had occupied the environment ministry to press the minister to resign over his failure to deal with the unprecedented waste management crisis.
