Macron stresses efforts to reopen Hormuz as TotalEnergies warns of global energy shortages

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that he is focusing on efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a day after the CEO of TotalEnergies warned of a potential global energy shortage if the war with Iran continues in the coming months.

Speaking at a press conference in Athens alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron said that uncertainty driven by geopolitical tensions could itself lead to energy shortages.

“Our goal is to achieve a full reopening of the strait in the coming days and weeks, in line with international law and ensuring freedom of navigation without transit fees,” he said. “At that point, things can gradually return to normal.”
