US, Canada fail to reach trade pact to avert Trump tariffs

The United States and Canada failed to reach a deal to avert new tariffs planned by President Donald Trump, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Friday, after days of negotiations that went down to the wire.

"Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week," Greer told reporters, despite Washington's offers for tariff reductions in sectors like steel and aluminum.
