Mikati receives evaluation report on situation at Roumieh prison

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Miqati headed Monday a meeting to discuss the situation at Roumieh prison and the progress reached so far in improving the conditions there.

During the meeting, Mikati received a report revealing that 75 percent of funds dedicated to the renovation works at the prison were spent on logistical matters, while only five percent were spent to improve the conditions of the inmates.

The meeting was attended by deputy Prime Minister Samir Moqbel, caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel, caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi, and caretaker State Minister Marwan Kheireddine.

For his part, Moqbel noted that a large part of the funds was misspent, deeming the situation at Lebanon's largest detention facility as “tragic and pathetic.”

He added that another meeting will be held on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Miqati and attended by Qortbawi, the general prosecutor, general financial prosecutor, and head of the inspection bureau.
