Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Hamadoun Touré acknowledged on Monday that Lebanon is an active country when it comes to internet and telecommunication, highlighting the fact that there were 10,000 telecom engineers and the environment has an impact on the country’s high ranking.
Touré pointed that the Ministry of Telecom and the Regulatory Authority worked together to achieve a good ranking stressing that Lebanon should progress in the digital communications field.
“The ITU will endorse laws to penalize those who breach electronic security,” he said, highlighting that cabinets should face them.
“In order to address this issue we formed a team of specialists that worked on the legislative and judicial as well as on the electronic security areas of the subject including Israeli breaches. We have made great achievements from 2011 until 2013 and we hope that a cabinet will soon be formed so we can pursue activity in 2014,” he pointed.
On the other hand, Caretaker Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui stressed that telecommunication is an important influential economical factor in the world in Lebanon hoping that Lebanon turns from a country that consumes telecommunication to a country that exports it.
In this context, Sehnaoui said that the telecommunications sectors contributes to 9% of the GNP and that it leads the rest of the sectors noting that there were 2 million mobile internet subscribers and that growth indicator will continue to rise.
