Maronite Bishops condemn assault on President Sleiman's dignity

The council of Maronite bishops held on Wednesday their monthly meeting at Bkerke in which they voiced regrets over the campaigns launched against President Michel Sleiman, condemning the assault on "his dignity as the symbol of the nation's unity."

Tensions between Sleiman and Hezbollah reached unprecedented levels over the weekend when the president said during a speech that Lebanese parties should not hold onto "inflexible formulas" that hinder the drafting of the policy statement, in reference to the Resistance-Army-People formula.

On another note, the council hoped the Paris conference on Lebanon's support would succeed, hailing the efforts deployed by the Lebanese army and the rest of security apparatuses in addressing terrorism in the country.

As for the ministerial policy statement, the council hoped that the statement would be inspired by the Bkerke charter "without tackling the disputable issues."

The Maronite church revealed the charter last month. It calls for holding the elections of a new president on their due time and for Muslim-Christian partnership to run the country's affairs.

On another note, the council condemned the Israeli raid on Lebanon and the shelling from the Syrian side on Lebanese territories, as well as the attacks on Syria's Christians led by Takfiri groups, urging the United Nations and Arab countries to interferer to stop such assaults.
