MP Gemayel: Speaker Berri should have declared parliamentary state of emergency

MP Sami Gemayel said Thursday that Speaker Nabih Berri should have declared a parliamentary state of emergency and called for daily parliamentary sessions to elect a new president.

In a press conference held at Parliament, Gemayel said that presidential vacuum poses a threat to the country’s unity and democratic process, stressing that failure to elect a new president before May 25th, will hinder the parliamentary sessions and the legislative process.

“A number of deputies are intentionally obstructing the elections and they are to be held responsible for any state of vacuum,” he added.

A two-thirds quorum (86) of the 128 MPs is required for any electoral session to be held.

Parliament held the first round of the presidential elections where deputies failed to elect a new president, while the three other sessions set to pursue the course of the elections have failed to convene due to lack of quorum.
