PM Salam says liberation cannot be complete without security, democracy

Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam regretted on Sunday the Parliament's failure to elect a new head of state, urging officials to exert tireless efforts to reach consensus over the presidential elections.

“Liberation can only be complete when we achieve security and safety while protecting the country from regional repercussions,” PM Salam said on the occasion of the Resistance and Liberation Day.

Salam also noted that the joy of liberation cannot be felt unless democracy is restored to all constitutional institutions, saying: "This could only be achieved with the election of a new president".

President Michel Sleiman's six-year term ended Saturday midnight with Parliament failing to elect his successor due to the ongoing discrepancies between the rival March 8 and 14 camps.
