Sleiman: Proportional representation needs further studying

President Michel Sleiman said on Monday that the electoral law should not violate important principles that Lebanon was built on, adding that any attempt to draft a new law requires working in line with fundamental principles.  

During a conference on Lebanon and Proportional Representation in the 2013 parliamentary draft law”, Sleiman stressed that the proportional representation system is still being studied, adding that numerous workshops are being dedicated to it.

“The 1960 electoral law is no longer guaranteeing right representation for different categories of society and is not in harmony with peaceful coexistence”, Sleiman said.

Sleiman said that the electoral law should guarantee fair representation for women and young people and be in harmony with the Taef Agreement.   I

nterior Minister Marwan Charbel said that the proportional representation system guarantees fair representation for all.
