Speaker Berri says Arsal captives dossier concerns all the Lebanese

Speaker Nabih Berri said on Friday that the case of the Arsal hostages is a matter of concern for all the Lebanese people.

“The Lebanese must consider this case as their own,” Berri said on Friday afternoon as he received a delegation of the captives’ families in Ain El-Tineh.

Speaker Berri also highlighted the need to hand the Arsal captives dossier to the concerned authorities and to “deal with this national file as a confidential issue in order to secure the safe return of the kidnapped troops”.

“A swap deal to release the hostages is approved in principle,” Berri noted, saying he is cooperating with National Struggle Front MP Walid Jumblatt in this regard.

“Berri stressed that security committees will be formed to follow up on the dossier,” the captives’ families said.

The hostage troops and policemen were captured when jihadists from the Nusra Front and the Islamic State militant groups briefly overran the border town of Arsal in August and engaged in fierce battles with the Lebanese army.

Four captives have so far been executed, and the jihadists have threatened to kill the remaining hostages unless there is a deal to free Islamist prisoners in Lebanon.
