Lebanon’s PM Salam meets world leaders in Munich
Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam on Sunday held meetings with world leaders in Munich with talks featuring high on the local and regional situations.     
 
Iran's foreign minister Mohammed Javad Zarif received PM Salam and tackled the Lebanese presidential elections, a file that has been stalled since over eight months.       
 
“We hope that Tehran would help elect a new Lebanese president as it supported the formation of a coalition government,” Salam said, addressing Zarif.       
 
For his part, the Iranian foreign minister stressed that Tehran is adamant to have a new head of state elected in Lebanon, saying his country is ready to back any agreement brokered by the Lebanese, mainly the Christian community.       
 
PM Salam also met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov who lauded dialogue sessions being held in Lebanon, hoping “they would lead to positive changes in the political climate”.        
 
In this regard, Lavrov stressed the need to elect a new president "who shall represent the Lebanese people and be able to assume his national role," pledging further assistance to help the country cope with the Syrian refugee crisis.       
 
“Russia will send assistance directly via the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR),” Lavrov added.       
 
Moreover, PM Salam received French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius who confirmed that the first shipment of French weapons will arrive to Lebanon on the first week of April.          
 
France is due to provide weapons and military equipment to the Lebanese army as part of a $3 billion grant from Saudi Arabia to help it fight jihadis encroaching into Lebanon from Syria.
