Joint Parliamentary Committee continues discussions over electoral law

The joint parliamentary committee tasked with the electoral law convened on Thursday to follow up talks on a suitable electoral law for the upcoming Lebanese parliamentary elections.

A trilateral meeting was held prior to the session between Deputy Speaker Farid Makari, MP Ibrahim Kanaan and MP Samir Jisr to agree on the formation and structure of a subcommittee. The subcommittee will be headed by Makari and will include MPs Ahmad Fatfat, Jean Ogassapian, Sami Gemayel, George Adwan, Alain Aoun, Ali Fayad, Ali Bazzi, Hagop Bakradonian, and Akram Chehayeb.

In this context, MP Ibrahim Kanaan told LBCI that the smaller committee will have a deadline (3 weeks) and will be in charge of discussing the electoral system and districts, as well as the procedures to assure the participation of the expatriates in the upcoming elections.

The committee will later refer the decisions to the larger joint parliamentary committee.

It was later agreed upon, following the request of Ashrafieh MPs that MP Serge Torsarkisian replace Ogassapian.
