US lead Senator Mendez and ranking member Risch ask Biden administration to use sanctions to pressure Lebanese politicians
US Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Robert Mendez and Ranking Member James Risch sent a letter to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen asking them to use sanctions to ensure Lebanese lawmakers select a new president and form a government.

“The need for an effective elected government, free from malign foreign influence and that prioritizes the needs of people, cannot be  understated,” the letter from Mendez and Risch added.

The letter asked the Biden administration to use all available leverage.

“Speaker Berri and other pro-Hezbollah politicians must stop playing procedural games with Lebanon’s future and allow for the maintenance of a quorum and for successive simple majority votes to take place,” the letter to the Biden administration added.

The letter added that the administration should coordinate with EU allies over possible future sanctions that target Lebanon’s financial and political elite from across the sectarian spectrum.
