Lebanese President condemns killing of UNIFIL peacekeeper in South Lebanon

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun condemned the killing of a United Nations peacekeeper serving with the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as well as the injury of several of his colleagues, following an attack that targeted a U.N. position near Marjayoun in South Lebanon.

In a statement, Aoun said the death of the international peacekeeper represents further evidence that the world has not abandoned Lebanon, stressing the importance of the continued presence of UNIFIL forces in the south.

He said the U.N. peacekeeping force remains committed to its mission and to helping establish security, stability, and peace in Lebanon and the wider region.

The Lebanese president also praised the sacrifices made by UNIFIL personnel in South Lebanon, saying they stand alongside those of residents, civilians, military personnel, and workers in emergency and relief services.

Aoun extended his condolences to UNIFIL Force Commander Diodato Abagnara and to the family of the slain peacekeeper, wishing a speedy recovery for those injured in the incident.

UNIFIL has maintained a presence in southern Lebanon for decades, operating along the Blue Line between Lebanon and Israel amid ongoing tensions in the border area.
