REPORT: STL sessions adjourned until Wednesday, January 22

 
The presiding Judge of the trial chamber at the Special tribunal for Lebanon David Re adjourned on Monday the STL's sessions until Wednesday 22 January 2014.

The STL held on Monday a hearing to the preliminary statements of the defense lawyers for the accused, Hussein Ouneissi and Mustafa Badreddine.                                       
In this context, the spokesperson of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon Martin Youssef said that the prosecution did not accuse any political party, but individuals instead.                                

Youssef noted that there is no direct response to Syrian President Bashar Assad’s statements regarding the tribunal, stressing the STL’s course includes only legal procedures.

Assad said in an exclusive interview with AFP that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon is politicized and only aims at exerting pressure against Hezbollah.
              
The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing in which former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others were killed.

The suspects - Mustafa Amine Badreddine, a senior Hezbollah figure and brother-in-law of slain Hezbollah commander Imad Moughniyeh, Salim Jamil Ayyash, Hussein Hassan Oneissi and Assad Hassan Sabra - remain at large.
