REPORT: Russian Deputy FM Bogdanov meets Lebanon’s officials, voices support to LAF
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has denied claims about a Russian initiative to form a “rescue” government in Syria, noting that his country is holding contacts with the Syrian government and opposition, inside and abroad.

Following his meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri, Bogdanov also highlighted the need to consolidate friendship and cooperative ties between Russia and Lebanon, saying his country will continue to support Lebanon on the political and economic levels as well as in the military field.

“Russia aims to bolster the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security forces in their fight against terrorism,” he added.

As well, Bogdanov held talks on Friday with former Lebanese President, Michel Sleiman, whereby he urged the holding of a speedy election of a new president, calling for the recognition of the Baabda Declaration by all the countries in the Middle East region.

"Russia is keen on Lebanon's stability and encourages the holding of the presidential elections as soon as possible,” he added.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister hailed the role of the Lebanese army and security forces fighting terrorism. For his part, President Sleiman said that the presidential vacuum only serves terrorist groups.

He also called for Russia's support for the Lebanese army "which is fighting everybody's battle against terrorism."

Bogdanov then headed to the Grand Serail where he met with Prime Minister Tammam Salam with talks featuring high on the local and regional front as well as bilateral relations.
