REPORT: Upon his official resignation, Lieberman gets ready for electoral campaign

Avigdor Lieberman officially resigned his post as foreign minister and deputy prime minister to stand trial on charges of breach of trust. However, Lieberman seemed confident and ready to return to the political scene stronger than before.     

Lieberman said that he will leave the government only for a short period of time and Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in charge of the foreign ministry along with Lieberman, will run the electoral battle through an alliance list with Netanyahu.      

Lieberman’s resignation was the result of pressure exerted by the judiciary and the opposition who both prompted him to resign immediately. Lieberman responded to the call in order not to deprive the opposition of electoral points.        

Today, Lieberman joins the long list of Jewish leaders who resigned and some of them were even imprisoned after being convicted of corruption or moral offenses. However, Lieberman survived dangerous charges in a case which was closed by the prosecution.      

The debate over this case is heated in Israel, and the prosecution said it failed to collect irrefutable evidence “due to negligence”, according to opposition figures. However, eventually, Lieberman will be accused which will satisfy his opponent.
