“Memory Box” will represent Lebanon at the 95th Academy Awards

The movie “Memory Box” ( دفاتر مايا) is Lebanon’s Official Entry for the International Feature category at the 95th Academy Awards.

Starring Rim Turki, Manal Issa, Paloma Vauthier, Cleménce Sabbagh, and Hassan Akil, the movie was screened in many film festivals.

The film first premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) and won many awards worldwide, including the Audience Award at the Arab Film Festival in San Francisco and two awards from the jury and the audience at the Mizna Arab Film Festival, in Minneapolis, USA, among others.

Directed by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, Memory Box tells the story of Maia, a single parent who lives in Montreal with her teenage daughter, Alex.

One Christmas Eve, they receive an unexpected box filled with notebooks, tapes, and photos Maia sent to her best friend, dating back from 1980s Beirut.

Maia first refuses to open the box and confront the memories, but her daughter secretly begins to enter her mother’s adolescent world during the Lebanese civil war.
