France to summon Israel envoy over Jerusalem church incident: Foreign ministry

France's foreign ministry said it would summon Israel's ambassador in the coming days after Israeli police Thursday entered the French-owned Eleona church compound in Jerusalem and briefly detained two gendarmes.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot cancelled a visit to the site following the incident.

France claims the sanctuary on the Mount of Olives as its territory under international treaties. It has been the focus of diplomatic incidents in the past.
