Mali rebels 'regrouping', situation is 'difficult': Russian military

Russia's military said Tuesday that rebels and jihadists in Mali who seized a key town in an offensive were "regrouping" and that the situation was still "difficult".

Russia's Africa Corps paramilitary unit, deployed to support Mali's ruling junta, was forced to abandon the key northern town of Kidal in fighting over the weekend, Moscow's defense ministry confirmed in a statement on social media.

"The enemy has not abandoned its aggressive intentions and is regrouping. The situation in the Republic of Mali remains difficult," it added.
