Trump: Halting Iran’s nuclear program more important than Americans’ economic hardship

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the financial difficulties facing Americans would not influence his decision-making as he seeks to negotiate an end to the conflict with Iran, stressing that preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains his top priority.

Asked by a reporter whether Americans’ economic situation was pushing him toward a deal, Trump replied: “Not even a little.”

Speaking before departing the White House for China, Trump said: “The only thing that matters, when I talk about Iran, is that they cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

“I’m not thinking about Americans’ financial situation. I’m not thinking about anyone. I’m thinking about one thing: We cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” he added.

Trump’s remarks are expected to draw criticism from opponents who argue that the administration should balance geopolitical goals with the economic impact on Americans, especially as cost-of-living concerns remain a key issue ahead of November’s midterm congressional elections.

White House Communications Director later defended Trump’s comments, saying the president’s “ultimate responsibility is the safety and security of Americans,” adding that Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon would threaten all Americans.
