Lebanon’s heritage in danger once again

The traditional palaces are located in the Zoukak al-Bilat Street in the capital Beirut. Dar Akar building is on the verge of collapsing according to banners on the fence surrounding it saying: “careful, building on the verge of collapsing”. The residents confirm that these warnings reveal preparations to the total demolition of the building.

Near Dar Akar is located the Hnayneh palace, known as “Beit Dahech”, which is also suffering from damages caused by nearby workplaces “by mistake”.

In this context, “Save Beirut’s heritage” gathering closely monitored both palaces and reported all illegal demolition activities. The palaces stand in front of people’s ambitions to take advantage of their locations estimated to be worth millions of dollars.

Even though the heritage is in danger, the competent authorities do not seem to be interested in protecting it, leading the mentioned palaces to be enlisted among the victims of the criminals targeting Lebanon’s heritage.
