First contact established between Washington negotiating delegation and Lebanon’s president, details emerge

A first contact was established between the Lebanese negotiating delegation in Washington and President Joseph Aoun.

The delegation explained that the negotiations are proceeding along two tracks. The first is military and focuses on a ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the release of detainees, the return of displaced residents to their villages, and reconstruction efforts.

The second track is political and centers on extending state authority, disarming Hezbollah, and reaching a permanent end to hostilities or a broader agreement to end the war, including a potential security arrangement with enhanced border measures.

Lebanon is seeking practical arrangements to solidify the ceasefire and prevent attacks on civilian facilities and civilians, while the U.S. side is described as understanding the Lebanese position.

The delegation also said there is a unified Lebanese stance among state institutions, adding that a ceasefire would fully open the door for Lebanon to meet its commitments.

It confirmed that discussions are proceeding in a generally positive atmosphere, but that no details have yet been set regarding the timing, location, or agenda of the next session.
