President Aoun: Civil peace must be preserved, no alternative but negotiation to end war

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun stressed the importance of preserving civil peace and internal stability, warning against any actions that could incite strife and threaten the country’s existence, saying such behavior serves Israel’s interests.

Speaking to a delegation of professional syndicate heads, Aoun said civil peace “cannot be touched,” noting growing public conviction that there is no return to the past, while the political class is working to contain the issue through a unified and clear discourse.

He said the army and security forces are the “backbone” of preventing unrest, despite facing criticism while continuing to make major sacrifices.

Aoun added that Lebanon has suffered over 3,000 killed, more than one million displaced, and widespread destruction, with no clear horizon for an end to the crisis.

He said it was his duty as president to act in line with his conscience and responsibility toward the country, stressing the need for the state to protect its citizens and avoid passivity, adding that there is no alternative but negotiation.

He concluded that true strength lies not in war but in the courage and wisdom to end it through negotiations that serve the national interest.
