Leonid Kravchuk, the first president of an independent Ukraine, dies at 88

Leonid Makarovich Kravchuk, who shepherded Ukraine out of the collapse of the Soviet Union and signed off on giving up the country’s nuclear arsenal as its first popularly-elected president, died at 88 on Tuesday.
