Cautious calm is prevailing on Sunday over the northern city of Tripoli with intermittent sniper fire and sporadic gunshots being heard. A Lebanese Armed Forces officer and another soldier were injured on Sunday at dawn during clashes in Tripoli, and were taken to the Zgharta hospital for treatment.
The meeting was held in the presence of Social Affairs Minister Rashid Derbass, and other political and religious figures from Tripoli’s Bab al-Tabbaneh.
On Saturday night, clashes intensified in the city where the Lebanese Armed Forces responded to sources of fire.
Protests were held in the region of Bab al-Tebbaneh, while a number of sheikhs and Muslim scholars started deploying efforts to reach a solution and ease the tension.
During the clashes, a LAF soldier identified as Fadi As-Saqaan was killed, and another military personnel was also killed when a grenade was tossed on a military tank in the region of Mallouleh.
A new round of clashes erupted in Tripoli on Thursday March 13th killing at least 12 and injuring 63 others.
The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.
But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.
These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot. For the full report, please click on the VIDEO above
